Introduction

Hip Replacement My new HIP: June 22nd 2009, I received a new hip. 13 years ago I was diagnosed with degernerative arthritis of my Rt hip. Back then I was sure that the hip pain I was having was due to the epidural I received during labor of my 2nd child. It really shocked me that at age 38 I had a form of arthritis. The last 3 years I had 2 procedures to help with the pain. They were steroid injections right into the hip.The first one was like a miracle. I almost felt normal, minimal pain. It lasted for about 6 months. The 2nd one had no effect. So now my only option was surgery. So at age 51 I had the surgery using the Posterior approach. As a single parent and caring for a mentally disabled 13 yr old (Samantha) I had to relay on my oldest daughter (Jessica) age 31 to care for her sister while I was in the hospital and to assist me with my recovery. Samantha and I would stay with Jessica and her family (Hubby & my 2 grandsons) for the recovery. Jessica would be the one to drive me every where. Jessica planned to have me stay with her for 3 to 4 weeks. I planned on only 1 week. The excitement of getting back to my pre-hip NO PAIN days of going out dancing, play a round of golf, go to the Zoo, or something as simple as shopping for an hour or more was overwhelming as was the fear.

My Journal:

Sept 12, 2009 Saturday

Well doing pretty good, I still have some pain but no limp any more, with exception of when I first get up. I still can not lay on the operated side for very long at most 1 hr. For it will start to throb. I still use a pillow between my legs. If I forget I will know for it will hurt if moves inward to fast. My other leg now hurts when sleeping I don’t know if it is because of sleeping on that side to much or what. But the thigh area will throb with pain and also on my good leg, my heal (or back of it) always hurts too when I first get up. Feels like the skin is too tight. Weird!!!!! Yesterday I noticed a bruise on my operated leg on the side of my knee. This (my knee has been giving me problems for a while) but where did this bruise come from??? I know I did not injury it… It’s a little bigger then the size of a half dollar and right now is yellow in color. I still can not put on socks, can’t bend that far or lift my leg that far. So good thing it is not winter yet… I did notice last week when it was raining very hard and for about 2 days that my leg hurt more. Or was this all just in my mind??? I am still carful too when sitting, especially at the computer to have the wedge between my legs, Again when I forget I tend to let the leg go inward and when that happens it is not a good feeling!!!!

Sept 26th:
Well not much has changed since the 12th. Other then the bruise is gone, But that area of my knee still is tender. I still don’t get a good nights sleep. After about 5hrs tops I awake with pain. So that’s not good. I don’t understand why my good leg is hurting and the pain in the back of my ankle? I will not “WILL NOT” ever do the surgery again. I so hope I don’t have this degenerative arthritis in all my joints??. And if so, I hope that a good non addictive drug is out their. As I said earlier, I don’t use a cane any more other then if out on long walks. I can now raise my leg all the way up, not as good as the good one but still I can. I still can not bend as to put on socks and or shave my leg. So I still use my make shift razor. And as far as the limp, I do still limp but only when I first get out of bed or from setting. It takes about 10-15 steps to lose the limp. But then if like today (a lot of walking) I still feel it and it hurts and It Clicks. So this is when I use the cane.
